Activity Rationale and Purpose

As the FDA approves new drugs into use for oncology patients, it is essential that APs are aware of these drugs, the clinical trial data upon which they are approved, their toxicity profiles, and appropriate patient selection for these new therapies.

The intended audience for this enduring internet activity is nurse practitioners, PAs, clinical nurse specialists, advanced degree nurses, hematology/oncology nurses, pharmacists, and physicians who specialize in the field of oncology and hematology.

Learning Objectives

After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the pharmacology and indications of medications approved from late 2016 to 2017 for the management of patients with hematologic cancers 
  • Recall the pivotal clinical trial data considered by the FDA when approving new oncologic agents
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of serious or life-threatening adverse effects of newly approved oncology
  • Describe the impact of these agents in advanced practice
