Activity Rationale and Purpose
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated mortality, with 224,390 new cases and 158,080 deaths estimated in 2016 in the United States. Late diagnosis is a fundamental obstacle to improving these outcomes, with the majority of patients presenting with advanced/metastatic disease. Advanced practitioners are the fulcrum of NSCLC treatment, especially in advanced/metastatic disease. They must be knowledgeable of the diagnostic and treatment paradigms to best facilitate effective communication with both patients and oncologists.
The intended audience for this enduring internet activity is physicians, PAs, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, advanced degree nurses, oncology and hematology nurses, and pharmacists who specialize in the field of oncology.
After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the range of genetic variants in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and how they are used to select targeted agents for patients with NSCLC
- Identify current diagnosis and treatment paradigms for patients with squamous cell NSCLC
- Identify and manage adverse events that occur with the use of immunotherapies across all subtypes of NSCLC
