Activity Rationale and Purpose
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a dreaded side effect for many patients and inadequate prevention has been documented in up to 85% of patients. Either or both nausea or vomiting may lead to a downward clinical spiral of weight loss, malnutrition, diminished quality of life, and delayed or even discontinued treatment – and perhaps poor overall outcomes. CINV is easier to prevent than to treat, and there are effective antiemetics to control acute and delayed CINV in many patients, enabling patients to maintain their quality of life while remaining on cancer chemotherapy. Oncology APs are often a patient’s primary contact for adverse effects related to treatment or disease, and should be clear leaders to incorporate and apply antiemetic guidelines into their practice setting(s); categorize treatment-related risk for CINV; use a thorough history, review of systems, and physical examination to aid in identifying individual patient’s risks for N&V; teach patients, families, and professional colleagues about the importance of preventing CINV; and to closely follow patients to change antiemetic strategies as needed.

After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the various mechanisms of action for agents used to manage chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), such as NK1 and 5-HT3 receptor antagonists
- Recall chemotherapy agents that are highly and moderately emetogenic
- Demonstrate how advanced practitioners should anticipate and prevent delayed CINV in cancer patients
